The common pattern still looks like this: a chatbot sits beside the application, takes prompts, and returns a block of text that the user then has to translate back into action. That works for narrow tasks. It starts to break down when the workflow is visual, stateful, and full of partial decisions — booking travel, editing content, triaging support, configuring software, or coordinating multi-step actions across screens.

CopilotKit is arguing that the answer is not a better chatbot wrapper. It is to move agents into the application itself.

That is the thesis behind AG-UI, the company’s open protocol for connecting AI agents to user interfaces. In TechCrunch’s reporting on the round, AG-UI is described as standardizing how agents communicate with apps and render inside them, with support for streaming chat, front-end tool calls, and state sharing. In practice, that matters because it shifts the unit of design from “prompt and response” to “agent and interface.” The agent is not merely generating text. It is participating in the UI loop.

What AG-UI changes technically

The technical significance of AG-UI is not that it adds another API for model calls. It is that it defines a protocol layer for agent-to-UI interaction.
