Google is making a clear statement about where it thinks enterprise AI adoption should happen: not in isolated training modules, but inside the product and event surfaces where teams are already trying to move models into production.
At Google Cloud Next ’26, the company is weaving its GEAR program throughout the conference experience, positioning it as more than a learning catalog. The framing is deliberate. GEAR is being presented as a hands-on AI training system for building and launching enterprise-ready agents at scale, and Next ’26 is becoming the place where that system is supposed to start working in practice.
That matters because enterprise AI skilling has often been treated as a separate discipline from deployment. Teams take courses, earn certificates, and then hit the usual wall: governance review, platform integration, security controls, operational handoff, and the real question of whether the skills map to actual production workflows. Google’s move suggests a different model. GEAR is being embedded directly into the conference through mini-labs, learning paths, and workshops so that the path from training to implementation is narrower and more opinionated.
The program itself is built around concrete mechanics rather than broad AI literacy. Google says GEAR includes 35 monthly learning credits, access to the Google Skills Discord community, curated agentic news and resources, and a Get Certified option for Google Cloud customers at no cost. That combination is notable because it links informal learning, peer support, and certification into a single pipeline. For technical teams, the message is less about inspiration than sequencing: learn the system, work through the labs, and then formalize the knowledge through certification.
The technical curriculum points in the same direction. The learning paths highlighted for Next ’26 include Introduction to Agents and Google’s Agent Ecosystem; Develop Agents with Agent Development Kit, or ADK; Deploy Production-Ready Agents; and Scale Agents Across the Enterprise. That progression reveals the shape of the program. It is not trying to teach abstract AI concepts in isolation. It is trying to move users from agent basics into implementation with ADK, then into deployment and scale.
The inclusion of ADK is especially telling. Agent Development Kit is the bridge between conceptual agent work and something closer to an enterprise build system. In Google’s telling, the value is not just in understanding what agents are, but in developing them with a toolkit that fits the company’s platform logic and then pushing them toward production-ready agents. For practitioners, that signals a curriculum that is likely to reward familiarity with Google Cloud primitives, Google’s ecosystem choices, and the operational assumptions that come with them.
That has operational upside, but also strategic consequences. A structured path from hands-on AI training to certification and then to production deployment can shorten the gap between experimentation and implementation. It can also create a more standardized internal skill base, which matters for security reviews, supportability, and repeatability across teams. But the same structure can also tighten dependence on a single vendor’s stack, especially when the training content is aligned so closely to a specific ecosystem of agents, deployment tooling, and enterprise scaling patterns.
That is the central tension in Google’s GEAR push at Next ’26. On one side is an unusually pragmatic answer to a real enterprise problem: how to produce production-ready agents with people who have the right skills, not just the right enthusiasm. On the other is the risk that the fastest path to competence is also the most lock-in-heavy path to competence. If the learning path, certification path, and deployment path all point in the same direction, interoperability becomes something enterprises have to actively design for rather than assume.
The governance question is just as important as the tooling question. If teams are being trained to build enterprise-ready agents and production-ready agents using Google’s own learning flow, then enterprises need to ask where policy enforcement, auditability, access control, and lifecycle management sit in that stack. Training can accelerate adoption, but it does not replace the operational work of deciding how agent behavior is reviewed, how deployments are segmented, and how changes are governed across environments.
There is also a procurement angle that will be hard for technical buyers to ignore. Google’s Get Certified option for customers at no cost lowers one barrier to entry, while the credits and on-site learning make the program easier to consume. That can be a useful enablement mechanism, but it also changes the economics of platform adoption. If the training is bundled tightly into the vendor experience, the cost of switching later can rise even if the initial learning looks free or discounted.
Seen in that light, GEAR is less a side program than a funnel into Google’s production AI posture. It is whether the skills it produces remain portable enough to preserve architectural choice as AI systems move from experimentation to production.
