The new signal is not that computer science has lost relevance. It is that the old bargain around CS — study the major, learn to code, and the market will absorb you — is getting more conditional right when AI companies need people who can ship systems, not just write code.

That matters now because the constraints in AI are shifting from model access to deployment capacity. Teams can buy API calls, fine-tune a model, or spin up a prototype faster than ever. What still slows them down is the unglamorous work around data pipelines, evaluation, integration, observability, guardrails, security, and change management. If the student pipeline feeding those jobs is flattening, the bottleneck moves from compute to human capital.

The wall is about composition, not just headcount

The obvious interpretation of a plateau in CS interest is that the job market got harder. That is only part of the story. The more technical interpretation is that the skills mix demanded by AI products is moving away from purely algorithmic programming and toward systems work that sits between software engineering, data engineering, and model operations.

A traditional CS curriculum still matters: algorithms, operating systems, databases, networking, and software design remain the scaffolding for any serious AI stack. But the day-to-day work of deploying AI features rarely stops there. When a company assumes it can turn a prototype into a production feature on the same cadence as a typical SaaS release, it often underestimates the work required to make AI behavior stable enough for customers. The model may be available in days. The hardening work can take quarters.

Three bottlenecks show up repeatedly:

The next 90 days for AI teams
