In the beta now live in Malaysia, Saudi Arabia, Mexico, Argentina, and Singapore, users with public accounts can mention @meta.ai in a post or reply and get a public response from Meta’s assistant inside the same conversation.
That sounds like a simple invocation mechanic, but the product implication is bigger: Threads is testing an in-thread AI layer that behaves less like a separate chatbot and more like a participant in the social graph. The assistant’s reply is published as a post from the @meta.ai account, and it answers in the language of the post that triggered it. In practice, that makes the AI feel native to the conversation rather than bolted onto the side of it.
Meta told TechCrunch the goal is to help people get real-time context about trends and breaking stories, along with recommendations, without leaving the app. The examples are telling: questions about why a topic is trending, which looks are being discussed, or how a team is doing in the playoffs. This is not a full search product and not an abstract assistant demo; it is a context engine designed to sit directly in a public thread and add immediate, socially legible information.
The architecture matters because it changes the UX contract. A mention is a visible invocation, the AI response is public, and the language is mirrored from the triggering post. That combination is likely intended to make the interaction feel predictable across markets, but it also raises operational questions that don’t go away just because the feature is labeled beta.
