AI is dominating the automation conversation, but most factories do not run on headlines. They run on controllers, drives, HMIs, I/O modules, sensors, and other components that may have been installed years ago and are still doing the hardest job in the plant: keeping production moving. That gap between the industry’s innovation story and the physical reality on the floor is where the current Obsolescence Dilemma lives.

A phased modernization model that protects uptime

Beyond 12 months: build the bridge to Industry 4.0
By this point, the plant should have a clearer picture of where legacy assets are still strategically useful and where they are becoming structural drag. That is the moment to align future capital planning with broader digital architecture decisions: network segmentation, data access, software standardization, and control-system interoperability.
